Marseille 1-0 PSG: Where is this team going?

By: Thomas | November 22nd, 2009

I didn’t see the match, but it’s pretty clear from the highlights that we were completely outplayed. The lineup was like this:

Coupet
Ceara-Camara-Sakho-Armand
Jallet-Chantome-Clement-Sessegnon
Luyindula-Erding

It’s nice to see that Chantome started, but it was only due to Maka’s suspension, so he was played as a defensive midfielder, where he is far from his best.  Jallet has been good for us, but I question leaving Giuly on the bench in a game such as the Classico.

  • Coupet produced some excellent saves, including tipping Niang’s bullet onto the crossbar, but was at times shaky, allowing the ball to bounce off him and nearly resulting in further goals for OM.
  • Sakho was good, saving our necks countless times. I hate to say this, but he deserves a better side to work with.
  • Erding seemed to be our only attacking threat. That might work against small Ligue 1 sides, but not when we face OM, Bordeaux, or Lyon.
  • A managerial change is in order.  Kombouare is just not a particularly good manager, and our recent results have highlighted that.

So, on Wednesday we take on Boulogne, which I will actually be able to watch. This match  will either give us some momentum, or prove that this team ain’t goin nowhere this season.

Chris and I were watching the second half while skyping back and forth. His comment afterwards:

“Isn’t a derby supposed to have some kind of…drama?”

The part I saw was a huge snoozefest, but yes, alas, PSG was outplayed.

PSG should have stayed with Paul Le Guen, he’s a great coach. Last year if it wasn’t for the political troubles, the club would had won the league and reached at least quarterfinals in the UEFA Cup. Bad decision from the club’s management

I think that the club should hire a coach that can make play the team good and win titles fast. Such as: Hiddink (with a good offer he could leave Russia), Juande Ramos (out of contract) or even bring back Luis Fernandez (out of contract) and lets remember that he is PSG’s MOST SUCCESFUL COACH! with one Coupe de France, one Coupe de la Ligue, one Trophée des champions, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and one UEFA Intertoto Cup. I will love to see LF back. Or bring back other old coaches like Houllier or Artur Jorge (that although his style of play is boring he’s effective).

Laurie: OL-OM was enough drama to last Ligue 1 for a while.

Diego: Unfortunately I haven’t heard anything about the 1993 title thing, otherwise I would have posted it. I completely agree with your sentiments regarding Paul Le Guen. I was shocked that they let him go, although I have come to terms with Kombouare. I’m not particularly worried about Boulogne, as we beat them earlier in the season with a B squad, and I would also like to see Luis Fernandez back at the club.

This game was inevitably going to be boring (I realize this only in hindsight) given that it was after a long international break and the drama surrounding Henry– hardly anyone cared/was paying attention. The fact that it was on a Friday probably didn’t help either- it just didnt have the same atmosphere as the normal Classico.
