a great battle ahead

By: j | October 22nd, 2008

In a match later today Paul Le Guen leads PSG into UEFA Cup action against Bundesliga’s Schalke 04. Led by Fred Rutten, former Twente and PSV manager, Schalke attacks with a fluid 4-3-3 formation but has shown tremendous resolve in the defending end.

Clearly this will be a match in which PSG’s approach to minding the defensive aspect of fundamental Football is built for. In approaching their attacking trident led by embattled striker Kevin Kurányi, they can muster the toughest attack that PSG has yet to face. With this in-mind, Paul Le Guen’s will most likely to pack a five man midfield with Claude Makélélé orchestrating a defensive net. PSG’s attacking side will be without Ludovic Giuly to injury and will use a lone striker up-front with no indication of whether it will be Mateja Kežman or Guillaume Hoarau.

At present the German club is going through a trace of injuries problems and will be addressing the possible omissions of Christian Pander, Rafinha and Mladen Krstajić from the lineup with pre-match fitness tests. Returning to their attack and given PSG’s weakness against set-plays, Paul Le Guen should anticipate them coming straight at this area of concern and look to open up the match quickly.

I will report on the match as it concludes.

Well, PSG doesn’t seem to care a lot about either the UEFA Cup or Schalke as they decided to send out mostly players from their reserve team…

Jan, I’m stunned by this lineup and its obvious how they have no interest in this match as they have roughly nine out the normal lineup. It’s completely unexpected and they certainly didn’t announce this beforehand. Disgusting really for PSG supporters and I have no idea how to write up this review

This is why French teams suck in Europe. Most of them don’t even care about the UEFA Cup, which brings down our overall UEFA ranking. Pretty soon France will lose a CL spot. Honestly, I was expecting more ambition from PLG.

Chris / Inara – I agree with you regarding the performance. It was disgusting and deserving of being ripped into. I’ll post my review in the wee hours of the morning but that match was a waste of time and insulting to fans. Their wasn’t even the slightest attempt of posting a first-team squad and it was a run-out that they hoped to lose by a close margin. That has no place in the modern game.
