a wave of confidence
By: j | July 22nd, 2008
The recent signings of Lillian Thuram, Ludovic Giuly and Claude Makélélé have brought a great deal of attention to PSG, many trying to understand the clubs approach to the upcoming season and the path that is going down. And while it is seen as an obvious attempt to right its fortunes from the disastrous prior season, it is in-fact something much bigger.
Truthfully this brilliant brush-stroke on the canvas emanates the upper reaches of the clubs executive management that witnessed last seasons dismal masquerading of a PSG squad. The inhabitants of Parc des Princes failed miserably, not merely on the pitch but how they represented the club and of-course, this magnificent city. The weakness was easy to spot, a lack of pride and the plan they put in place is based upon merging the community and the team with a long-term perspective. It is a simple grassroots program that the games development has always been based upon but sadly lost in the modern business-side.
These signings have created an enormous rift along the sports underbellies as it signals something far bigger and quite frankly a card that should have been played long ago. Amongst a sport where billionaires and sleazy agents throw massive Euro transfer fees like black chips at the Baccarat tables, notions of “pride and honour” liberate it and take it to a different level. While many will point out the vast riches of contracts being thrown around in 2008, a hero’s welcome along the Champs-Élysées can’t be bought.
Returning to PSG you’ll notice the notion of “returning home” teem through sentiments now, just as you will family, honour and pride. There is growing wave of confidence that hasn’t been seen in sometime and while there are other notable signings on the immediate horizon, the importance is an understanding the wave of optimism and how it is being built. For PSG fans worldwide, la ville lumière will be proud.
