day 1 of a new captain
By: j | July 26th, 2008The day belonged to Claude Makélélé and Ludovic Giuly as they debuted in a solid 2-1 victory over La Gantoise at Parc des Princes.
Paul Le Guen surely must be dizzy with the vast changes of fortune over the last three months. Danglingly perilously close to relegation this April he is now in-charge of a squad that boasts none-other than Ludovic Giuly and Claude Makélélé, along with a management determined to provide him further assistance. The highlight of the day was of course, Claude Makélélé wearing the arm-band and beaming with pride.
This was quite obviously the first day of work, a simple friendly to slowly adjust to the pacing and style of mature genius’ on the pitch. While rhythm, cadence and tempo were lacking there were hints of brilliance on the horizon. Younger players continue to emerge and I can only imagine how the Footballing world must be amazed at the growth of Stéphane Sessegnon, who has quickly become a crowd favourite as well as Guillaume Hoarau who seems to have imported his goal scoring touch from Le Havre, where he spent last year. Notably the work of Jérémy Clément and Jérôme Rothen had a crispness to it that I haven’t seen in quite some time, leaving me very anxious for the future.

From an Englishman who lived in Paris for a few years I really hope PSG have a great season. There seems to be a real spark of optimism surrounding the new (old) faces.

Wow, I can’t believe Le Guen handed the armband to Makelele. He’s experienced but he’s only been in Paris for like a week. He doesn’t even know his teammates that well yet. Do you think that might create some resentment within the squad?

no, it won’t create problems and in-fact unify the team as well weave it closer to the city again. This will have a profound effect on Football in France and there are some very large undertakings going on now that will likely take a year or two to work out but are enormous.
