Insight into the Salary Situation

By: Thomas | November 25th, 2009

A few days ago Lyon blogger Inara sent me a link to an article from January 4th 2009 on Portuguese site Futebol Finance.  It contained the monthly salaries for the entire PSG first team:

SALÁRIOS MENSAIS DO PARIS SG

Claude Makelele-285.000 €
Ludovic Giuly-260.000 €
Mateja Kezma-250.000 €
Jérôme Rothen-160.000 €
Sylvain Armand-150.000 €
Mickael Landreau-140.000 €
Stéphane Sessegnon-120.000 €
Zoumana Camara-120.000 €
Jérémy Clément-105.000 €
Peguy Luyindula-100.000 €
Mamadou Sakho-90.000 €
Paul Le Guen-85.000 €
Grégory Bourillon-85.000 €
Ceara-80.000 €
Clément Chantôme-80.000 €
Guillaume Hoarau-80.000 €
Sammy Traoré-70.000 €
Fabrice Pancrate-55.000 €
Loris Arnaud-30.000 €
Apoula Edel-27.000 €
Granddi Ngoyi-15.000 €
Younousse Sankharé-15.000 €
Larrys Mabiala-7.000 €

So, the total payroll at that time last year was 2,409,000 euros a month (or 28,908,000 a year). Now our task is to add and subtract to that based on player movement and contract renewals to figure out the approximate current payroll. Lets do some subtraction first.

We can safely take Mickael Landreau, Paul Le Guen, Fabrice Pancrate, and Larrys Mabiala’s salaries out of the picture. That takes 287,000 euros a month off the bill, leaving us with 2,122,000 in total.

Now I’m going to start stepping onto thin ice. Mateja Kezman and Jerome Rothen were both sent out on loan with an option to buy, but there is no indication of how much (if any) of their salaries have been taken over.  So I’m going to use my Football Manager sense and assume that the club wouldn’t accept an offer with out a full salary contribution, so I’m taking off 410,000 euros a month (damn Mateja’s salary is big). That leaves us with 1,710,000 total.

In terms of additions, I really have nothing to go on. In terms of new contracts, Sessegnon and Ceara both extended. Sessegnon probably gets paid more now, but I have no idea how much. Ceara probably didn’t see much of a raise, but again I don’t know.  Erding and Coupet probably command pretty large salries, but I would still estimate that our current payroll is less than what it was last year. This should provide a bit of insight anyway.

Makelele’s salary is missing, just fyi. Kezman and Giuly are WAAAAAAY overpaid. Kezman’s salary is completely ridiculous. I’d like to know how this compares to other ligue clubs.

Oops, thanks for catching that. His salary contributes significantly to the payroll. I completely agree about Kezman, and I’m working on finding info about other clubs. If I find info i’ll put up a post about it on the Ligue 1 blog.

Salary situation for coaches are interesting too. http://www.sudouest.com/accueil/sports/football/article/804810/mil.html#xtor=RSS-2

You could add that to your totals.

What I find interesting is that Blanc only makes a little more than half of what Puel makes, yet the results are so different..
