Le Magnifique Rouge et Bleu

By: j | February 26th, 2009

In a shockingly easy fashion, Paris Saint-Germain defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 in Volkswagen Arena. Handing the German club their first loss at home this year, the Parisians now advance to the round of sixteen where they will face SC Braga on March 12.

While Wolfsburg attacked, each effort was held back and slowly Paul Le Guen’s side gained confidence. With seven minuted left in the half Jan Šimůnek was adjudged for bringing down Jérôme Rothen in the area and the spot was pointed to. Calmly Péguy Luyindula stepped up and gave les Rouge et Bleu the lead they would not relinquish. On the hour Jérôme Rothen scored from the edge of the area on an absolutely foul piece of defending that should embarrass Wolfsburg as he was left unmarked before finishing with a brilliantly placed drive. Japan international Makoto Hasebe drew one back three minutes later and he powered into the box. However the two goal margin was restored at the seventy-third minute when following a poor challenge by Andrea Barzagli on Péguy Luyindula a free-kick was awarded. Clément Chantôme’s strike was flicked in the net by Péguy Luyindula for his second of the night to take the match to a 3-1 conclusion.

I was heartbroken to see Bordeaux go out, but we still have PSG, Marseille and St. Etienne. Like Inara said, it would be great to see a French club take it.

remarkable match and given all things, this has to be one of the most commanding performances of the year.

Incredible month ahead with the upcoming UEFA Cup matches between crucial tests against l’OM and Toulouse.

    Thank you for the comments
