match-day one v AS Monaco preview

By: j | August 9th, 2008

With the opening match of the campaign just one hour from now, PSG makes its way to Stade Louis II, which has typically a very difficult place for them to win.

PSG’s off-season has been much talked about, with the addition of great veterans Claude Makélélé and Ludovic Giuly as well as the emergence of Stéphane Sessegnon as a lynch-pin in the clubs attack and Guillaume Hoarau showing solid abilities at striker. Yet it is time to put pre-season friendlies aside and move to the real world where matches are on-the-line.

In heading into this match, they will be challenged with the loss of Stéphane Sessegnon who is under suspension. He has been the key element in the attack during the pre-season and his absence will delay much of the planned attacking style till next week. Equally Claude Makélélé is expected to sit, although that is a match-time decision and we might see him in limited duties. Presuming Claude Makélélé is able to go, the entire complex of tactics open-up and provides countless opportunities.

The key to this match will be composure and not pressing attacking opportunities or Monaco will pounce on them quickly. The leadership of Ludovic Giuly will be instrumental in the attack, presuming of-course he is fully recovered from his injury. He will call upon a strong flanking attack with Jérôme Rothen one of the keys in PSG’s play today particularly as he puts Guillaume Hoarau and Fabrice Pancrate in position to score. Should Ludovic Giuly be able to go, Monaco’s defensive tactics take on an entire new complexion and create countless openings for the Striking core to capitalize on. Like so many matches, this will be won with mid-field play and tight, disciplined marking in your defensive end.

I will be posting a full match review at its conclusion. Till then, something to start the season with true style that I suppose tells you a little about your PSG blogger.
