PSG defeats RC Lens 2-0 in well played rematch

By: j | January 14th, 2009

In a well played rematch of last years controversial final, PSG defeated RC Lens 2-0 in the Coupe De La Ligue quarter-finals at Parc des Princes. With the victory PSG advances to face Bordeaux, who overcame Châteauroux 2-1.

As expected the match was a spirited affair but unlike last year’s unsavoury crowd actions, it will hopefully be the start of a long healing process with our northern neighbours. Jean-Guy Wallemme’s tenacious side showed attacking volition early however it was PSG that took the lead thirteen minutes in. With Jérôme Rothen’s corner coming in from the left, Les Sang et Or’s Sidi Keita was given a push in the box and the ball struck mid abdomen and found its way behind Vedran Runje for an unfortunate own-goal. Lens continued to look the part of a Ligue 1 side but could not break through the Parisians patient tactics. Opportunities were few and far between for the visitors but with five minutes remaining, Romain Sartre’s free-kick from twenty-five meters looked tantalizingly close but still to no avail. Finally as the match wore down in added time Péguy Luyindula’s crossing effort was pushed out by the Lens ‘keeper but Jérémy Clément quickly dispatched the gift to the back of the net to bring the match to its 2-0 conclusion.
