PSG falls to Bordeaux in Coupe de la Ligue
By: j | February 4th, 2009
Parisians hopes of advancing to the Coupe de la Ligue finals perished at Parc des Princes as Bordeaux defeated PSG 3-0 in decisive fashion. With Stéphane Le Mignan’s Vannes continuing their Cinderella run defeating Nice on penalties, the Girondins appear ready to add some hardware to the trophy case.
The match was a peculiar sort with notable attacking intent but quality defending in the final third of the pitch on either end, particularly Bordeaux’s Marc Planus and Souleymane Diawara. PSG will however look back on the match with painful regrets as both Stéphane Sessegnon and Mateja Kežman missed glorious chances to score and the Serbian international will also feel a need to redeem himself following his angry reaction to being substituted at the hour.
In a moment of defending ineptitude, Laurent Blanc’s side took the lead seventeen minutes in against the run of the play as Franck Jurietti crossed brilliantly for David Bellion to nod home. Eyebrow raising calls as the half waned down denied the Parisians two penalty calls and the match went to the break 1-0. With the restart, the rich attacking play of the first half waned as resolve to go forward was reserved for the final moments. As PSG poured forward in the final minutes, they were susceptible to counter, which is precisely how Bordeaux scored its final two goals. With three minutes remaining Jussiê provided Souleymane Diawara a well-weighted ball with the Senegalese international finishing perfectly. Deep into added-time, Wendel added a bit of dressing to the score-line tucking the ball behind Mickaël Landreau from Fernando’s counter initiative to bring the match to its final 3-0 scoreline and make the Paris night seem a bit colder.
Following the match Paul Le Guen commented on Mateja Kežman throwing his shirt and walking to the to the change rooms:
“That was a lack of respect for the club. I am a member of this club and so I also think it was a lack of respect for me. This is the first time that such a thing has happened to me as coach. He will be punished.”
PSG returns to play this Saturday against Nantes.

What a magnificent game! Kezman should have put one of his opportunitues way, I was shocked he miss…I was in awe with Rame’s save. I think PSGdeserved a PK to be awarded… But Hey, we should have had one two, that foul against Jurietti.
Nice game anyways…

Tough luck. I only caught the last half hour, but this felt like a 1-0 game, or even a fairly even game, right up till the end when they threw everybody forward and gave up two goals. Too bad.

Thank you all for joining-in, it is much appreciated.
It certainly was a difficult match to lose, PSG definitely had its chances but as Laurie noted, it was effectively a 1-0 match before they threw forward.
Richard I tend to agree with you. Although I am very biased regarding Mateja Kežman as I have a high opinion of him and I wasn’t pleased with his actions, this has been building. I am posting right now on the matter and I question how Paul Le Guen is representing this publicly.
I also have significant questions of why Claude Makélélé wasn’t used in the match. With respect to Vannes, Bordeaux has clear sailing towards the Coupe and to leave him out at this stage was a odd decision.
