PSG held to draw by Lille

Paris Saint-Germain’s showdown against Lille turned out to a modestly intense match that concluded without a score. It was very clear that les Rouge et Bleu came into the match with intent but are suffering from having a smaller club as fatigue has set in with extended play in the UEFA Cup. Against les Dogues PSG offered little punch and looked heavy-legged in the attack allowing Lille ‘keeper Gregory Malicki to go virtually untested for ninety minutes. While Parisian supporters thirsted for three points, given the over-performing side is clearly stretched to its limit, the point should be welcomed.

In the first half Lille marked the only scoring chances, albeit each was well under control. Efforts by Eden Hazard and Michel Bastos before twenty minutes were moderately of interest but far from keeping anyone on the edge of their seat. While les Lillois were dominating the run of the play, it was well under control as the half ticked on. Six minutes into the half Stéphane Sessegnon was the architect of PSG’s long threatening chance as he moved into the right side of the box and after creating space, unleashed a shot that trailed wide. As the match waned on Lille dominated with attacking vision but were unable to cast the mark they needed. Late efforts by former PSG man Pierre-Alain Frau from seven metres came close but Mickaël Landreau was up to the challenge and the match concluded as a scoreless draw.

Paris Saint-Germain return to play this Thursday in their crucial UEFA Cup match against Ukraine powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv.
