Switching Keepers
By: Thomas | June 30th, 2009
So its official. Les Rouges et Bleus have signed 36 year old Gregory Coupet from Atletico Madrid after an unsuccesful season in which he was second fiddle to Argentine Leo Franco. To make room for the former Lyon and France gardien des buts PSG have allowed Mikael Landreau to move to Lille for an undisclosed fee.
I am completely baffled by this move. Coupet has at most one season left in him, and is well past his prime, barely playing last season after being signed as a starting keeper. Landreau on the other hand has been reliable for us since 2006, earning several France call-ups along the way. In my opinion, this is a ridiculous move in both a sporting perspective and a financial one (Landreau has around 6 seasons left in him to Coupet’s 1). Post in the comments if you think differently, but this has definitely put a damper on my excitement over the Erding transfer.

Coupet did excellent with Atletico, despite him not playing a minute in the second half of the season. I have no explanation to why he was benched, but he recently mentioned that being benched makes him hungrier to play. He’s got plenty left in him.
Also, welcome!

Thanks AI,
I only saw him play in one game (group stage against Marseille) where he played very well, but i assumed it was a fluke. Thanks for informing me of this.Posted from

This is a idiotic move from PSG! The reason why Landreau left has nothing to do with football, I suppose. And I’m sure Lille didn’t pay as much as his value requires.
