the story of Jimmy Briand is far from over
By: j | July 20th, 2008
To those unfamiliar with PSG’s courtship of Stade Rennais extraordinary young Striker, Jimmy Briand, lets just say the last efforts fell perilously short. While the young-gun, a soon-to-be force on the world scene in my opinion, was teetering on the verge of inking a long-term deal with PSG, for some unknown reason the club decided to pinch a few Euros and fell-short of Rennais €8 m rating.
From a management perspective I suppose PSG’s original bargaining position simply could be said to be foolish and one that didn’t quite recognize his talents or even how sought after he is. With the young French International reputedly garnering interest from luminaries such as Juventus, Barcelona and Arsenal, the clock is ticking and I suspect once Raymond Domenech comes to his senses (or reads it his astrological charts), the world will be uttering the name of Les Bleus new force, Jimmy Briand. At that time his valuation will soar to heights and this entire situation will be akin to Andre Arshavin of a few seasons ago and those who did not leap at the emerging talent.
With the deal lingering and both sides ready to come to the bargaining table, a number of sources including Le Equipe are reporting that PSG’s Charles Villeneuve has upped their offer to €8 m, a further €500 k for thirty-four year-old internationally capped veteran Sylvain Wiltord as well as send to Rennais the highly promising French U21 Defender Larrys Mabiala.
With Jimmy Briand, the pieces of the puzzle fall together brilliantly, the riposte / counter-attack led by Ludovic Giuly will be of the highest pedigree in Ligue 1.

This will happen. Rennes is just trying to get the best price they can get. They may just be practicing their bargaining chip for when everyone comes calling for Damien Le Tallec.

I don’t rate Briand as highly as you do in your post J. I think he misses too many chances. Apart from his physical play he doesn’t offer anything out of ordinary.

Everyone will be coming in for Damien Le Tallec pretty soon, he is an incredible talent. Briand isnt bad, he is not the best finisher though, and maybe under Le Guen he can florish.
