Mid last season I knew something was “up” with PSG and I certainly wasn’t the only one that could smell the foul issue of discontent that swarmed around the club. Oddly enough for those of us within the coaching fraternity, while the game gets bid-up with ridiculous sums of money involved, on the pitch it is never too far from the game we play in our childhood. Without chemistry and unity a team crumbles and regardless of individual talent, the team suffers and the beautiful game isn’t so beautiful.

I’m sure you’ll all recall last season, as much as you’d like to forget, the miserable play and the complete lack of unity. The problem was simple as it had become a steward-less ship that forgot that sacred element; as far as we go along the professional game, take heed those who forget the “family” aspect of a team.

Now only a few months forward in time it is quite obvious management has seen the error and working hard to right the course. Todays press conference announcing the arrival of Claude Makélélé wasn’t too far removed from the same for Ludovic Giuly where “family” was written in bold and underlined if not hammered in stone. By bringing in Lillian Thuram, Ludovic Giuly and Claude Makélélé management is wisely choosing to plan its future by embracing great French players and seamlessly making them a part of the community. When we do that as players, coaches and fans, the game is elevated to something far beyond the pitch and truly benefits society. I don’t suspect for a moment that my good friends in Lyonnais are quivering as they march towards a decade of dominance but I do think this is a great message for all of the sport, to remember where this game starts and what it truly is about.
