time to return home – Claude Makélélé

Arnaud Hermant and Frédéric Gouaillard of Le Parisien put together a superb interview today of Claude Makélélé today (and yes, that is a dig at those in the blogging world who use interviews and omit citing sources).
Within the article, as I noted previously, the “return home” to “his Paris” is a constant theme for Claude and one that we will see again from other players. The inspiration of the city, from the glamour of the Champs-Elysées, to the reminders of youth is a natural draw and one of the reasons why this revival will not be a short-lived one.
Claude was born in what is the Republic of Congo and with his family he moved to Paris at the age of five. Quite obviously through his youth, both in the game and outside of it, his upbringing and early years exist within the extraordinary city. As originally reported his playing contract is a year in length with an option for a second. Once his playing days are complete he will merge into a managerial position that will see him as an ambassador of the club and working closely in the community. Stressing his commitment to the revival of PSG, he is anxious for his debut this Saturday at Parc des Princes but I can also tell you he is about to experience something else. Not simply knowing he can give back to the community but the astonishing power of what it truly means.
Of important to note is that this return home to him isn’t merely about playing for club he cheered on through his boyhood club years but also the wishes of a man giving back to the community. I know the much of the attention will be paid in the next season on the pitch but the real work and impact is a few years from now and the many lives he positively impacts. This approach by the club is long overdue and the seeds is sows will reap a rich harvest in decades to come far beyond the grounds in the sport.
